Here is the transcript of my second book, now available on Amazon!
When I started thinking of what I wanted to write about it was challening. If you know me then you know I have so many ideas and they tend to keep me going in multiple directions. This idea of creating childrens stories out of my dissertation occured to me as I was the Literacy Specialist, then stepped in as a long term sub for 1st, then 2nd grade. I can appreciate how we use literature to teach morals and values through the eyes of others. I hope this series can inspire young children, especially our young girls, to follow their dreams!
Teresa the Tenacious –Learns to love herself!
Pg 1-2
Teresa the Tenacious had done it! She had achieved her dream of working very hard and being on the wrestling team. Some of her classmates were very happy, and some were very sad, some also became angry that she had won when they never could have.
3-4
Teresa was very proud of herself because she knew how hard she worked, she ran and jumped and climbed and swam just to grow as much as she can.
4-5
She wanted to be very strong, but she hardly saw any other women doing what she loved.
Teresa was walking by a store one day and she saw something that amazed her. It was a stand with books and posters all about the strong women that came before her.
5-6
They were artists, named Frida, and Pilots named Bessie, there were learners like Malala and fighters like Rosie. Teresa was mesmerized by the images before her, these women had all done the impossible, just as she wanted to be a wrestler.
7-8
Teresa went home from school that day and felt so very encouraged, she wished more girls would want to make a difference and wrestle alongside her.
8-9
Teresa had not broken records or started anything new, she was just an addition and a model that made other females determination stronger. Like Frida and Bessie, Tere was very brave. She practiced hard, and worked towards her goals every day. Not very many girls liked wrestling and many made fun of Tere. She felt sad because she knew how happy it made her, and wanted them to feel that way.
9-10
People said mean things about her because she did something girls normally did not do, and it made Teresa so sad and lonely she just wanted to hide alone in her room. Even though it made her happy, it also made her sad. The sport she truly loved the most, it was not made for girls to have.
11-12
The images of the women kept poking out in her mind. She pictured the image of Frida and how her looks were undefined. She didn’t care what others thought and did what made her happy. Frida lived fearlessly, and concerns of others were not anything to worry.
13-14
Teresa wondered what Frida would say as she kept working at this sport she loved, she ran she jumped and climbed all to reach her goal. She knew that girls made fun of her because she did what the boys were doing, but Tere kept working at it just like Frida had showed her, she kept painting.
One day, Tere was walking down the hall and she saw a brand new girl, she saw her standing all alone and recognized her stare. She knew this girl felt lonely as she had felt before, she walked right up to her, to introduce herself and said hello.
15-16
Tere was bright eyed as she introduced herself in hopes of making a brand new friend, the girl replied her name and that she loved the sport of wrestling! Tere smiled so very big and knew she found a teammate, she wanted more girls to join the team with her and finally found one.
Teresa felt so very happy, even as she was discouraged that others made fun of her, she felt more like those women in those pictures now that had gone and changed the world, now there was not only one girl on the team there was two, and more to come!
17-18
That year Teresa made so many friends, she wrestled here and wrestled there and even went to huge events. The time she spent practicing was finally paying off, she had new friends, she was making more progress and she had learned about how to love herself, just like these role models of strong women.
Teresa learned a lot that year but she especially learned one thing…Just because we like something that we are not supposed to, does not make us different, it makes us more the of the same. Everyone has their favorite thing, and Tere’s was wrestling.
When you find your passion, live it. Sometimes others may not understand what drives us, or what motivates you to try new things. This is okay, it is just their way of thinking. We always need to remember that staying true to yourself will make you the happiest in the end. When we change ourselves to the liking of others we often will be disappointed with the results. Be true to you, and always love yourself!
